Our show this Tuesday will discuss the Supreme Court's decisions in Fisher v. University of Texas and Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt.In Fisher v. University of Texas, Abigail Fisher was a freshmen applicant to the University of Texas whose application was denied. She blamed the University’s new race-conscious policies, saying they were against the Equal Protection Clause and that they disproportionately discriminated against her and other Caucasian students. The University of Texas’ policies were based on a principle rooted in affirmative action. They said they were trying to promote diversity. After three years of back-and- forth litigation, the Supreme Court issued the last official ruling in this case in favor of the University and affirmative action. Our expert guests will discuss why the court decided this way; why diversity in higher education is so important; and, how all this could affect your life.The second half of the show will discuss the recent Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt decision. In Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, a 2013 Texas Legislative bill held abortion clinics to extraordinarily high standards, saying it was in the best interests of women’s health; however, instead it created unnecessary obstacles and burdens on women seeking an abortion and on abortion clinics, many of which were forced to shut down in Texas. The Supreme Court struck down the Texas Legislative bill and held in favor of abortion rights in a 5-3 decision. Our expert guests will discuss what impact abortion clinic closings have on women of color; why this decision was a big deal; and, how it affects women’s health going forward.
